During the first Vinyasa class you will be introduced to a whole new types of postures, two more classes and you will wonder why you haven’t tried this practice before!

What makes Vinyasa one of the most popular yoga practices worldwide?

Vinyasa is insanely fun (and hard), but after you have familiarised yourself with the different poses, you start to think that some of the postures you have always wanted to perform (gracefully) aren’t out of your reach, and it is just a matter of practice to do the perfect chaturanga, scorpion or tripod handstand, it feels magnificent!

What does a Vinyasa class looks like? What is its structure?

Vinyasa starts with something called sun salutations (LINK). Sun salutations can vary but a basic series of sun salutations commonly involves the following poses:

  • Tadasana (Mountain Pose)
  • Urdhva Hastasana (Upward Salute)
  • Uttanasana (Standing Forward Bend)
  • Low Lunge (Anjaneyasana)
  • Plank Pose
  • Chaturanga Dandasana (Four-Limbed Staff Pose)
  • Urdhva Mukha Svanasana (Upward-Facing Dog Pose)
  • Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward-Facing Dog Pose)

Then it moves towards powerful warrior poses, standing poses, hip openers, backbends and inversions. The secret, as in Bikram, is listening to the teacher carefully, so you start to link your breathing with your movements, which is one of the main objectives of this type of yoga. It is also important, as in any physical practice, to be constant and disciplined, and to have an open heart and mind.
